About Aubrey Silinyana – Producer, Festival Director, Incubator
Aubrey Silinyana was born in South Africa and is currently working both in South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho.
For the past 23 years he has been on a journey of touching many lives with his varied skills as a creative arts practitioner. He possesses rich and diversified experience - proficient in various art forms and different aspects of film production.
This has seen him writing and performing four theme songs, publishing six manuscripts, directing and producing 13 films, performing countless theatre pieces, producing countless corporate videos and event videos where he was both a camera operator and video editor.
Currently, he is a Film and Photography Division Manager at Aliwal Sound Service and is based at the Aliwal North head office of the company which is also in closer proximity to the Kingdom of Lesotho, where he started working in 2018. He has also been the Festival Director (2016 to 2018) of the Sondela Youth Film Festival which takes place in Aliwal North as part of the Sondela Youth Festival.
Silinyana has also enlarged his territory by working in the Free State Province in South Africa and Lesotho (a different country) where he registered a company called Film Sector Groundbreakers (Lesotho), where he is also the Festival Director of the King Moshoeshoe Film Festival, an event that takes place in the Free State Province and Lesotho.
He started in the arts industry in general in 1999 and only started in the film industry in 2004 when he was employed as a TV presenter at Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN). Since 2008 he has undertaken many assignments to train other filmmakers and performing arts practitioners in various aspects of film production.
As a result, there is a growing number of people who regard him as a young creative industry veteran who is becoming a personality of note in the film sector in Southern Africa and the rest of the African continent.
Silinyana is also getting more and more recognition in the wider African continent and is active in several Whatsapp groups of the top filmmakers in Africa including Africa Film Consortium, FilmAfrica, Afriwood, African Language Film Hub, Africa Film Producers, Film for African Wildlife and many more in South Africa and Lesotho, where he also the admin.
In March 2022 he was elected as the Chairperson of the Organising Committee that travelled to the Luxor African Film Festival in Egypt to launch the Africa Film Festival Association. His travels to Egypt have also widened his networks and exposure to the North African territory and the Gulf.
Silinyana is now practising more as a producer, festival director and concept developer of emerging filmmaker incubation programmes where he is able to apply most of the knowledge he has acquired in various aspects of film production throughout his 20 year-old career which includes concept development, scriptwriting, producing, directing, cinematography, editing, production design and acting.
